What a hawker stall really needs from a POS system
-
Every payment type. DuitNow QR from any bank app, Touch ‘n Go eWallet, and cards for customers who don’t carry cash.
-
Proof the money arrived. A device that announces each payment out loud, so you can keep cooking and still catch a fake screenshot.
-
Battery and mobile data. Stalls move, food court Wi-Fi is patchy and power points are scarce.
-
Daily totals in your phone. No more adding up QR notifications at night.
-
Low running costs. Margins on a RM8 plate don’t leave room for high fees.
Kitchen printers, table maps and staff rosters can wait until you grow.
Three setups, by stall size
| Stall type | Setup | Why it fits |
| One-person stall, mostly QR and cash | QR soundbox plus the POS app on your phone | Lowest cost; voice alerts confirm every QR payment |
| Busy stall, cards and tourists | All-in-one payment terminal with QR, cards and e-wallets | One device for every payment; dynamic QR fills in the amount |
| Food court tenant with queues and delivery | Payment terminal, POS app, table QR ordering and delivery orders on one screen | Orders and payments land in one place during peak |
Start with the first setup if you’re unsure. You can add card payments and QR ordering later without changing systems.
Stop fake payment screenshots
Screenshot scams hit stalls hardest because the cook is also the cashier. A customer shows an old or edited transfer, and there’s no time to check. Two features prevent most of it:
-
Voice confirmation. The device says the amount aloud when a real payment lands.
-
Dynamic QR. A fresh QR is created for each sale with the amount pre-filled, so the customer can’t enter the wrong figure.
Do you need QR ordering at a food court?
For a single stall with a short queue, no. For a food court where customers sit far from your stall, table QR ordering cuts the walk back and forth and the misheard orders. See how one operator used it in our QR code ordering case study.
What it costs
A basic QR soundbox costs less than a full POS terminal, and DuitNow QR payments often carry no fees. Card payments carry a percentage per transaction. For hardware price ranges, see POS machine prices in Malaysia. For the wider case for going digital, see the benefits of a point of sale system.

How EPOS360 works for hawkers
EPOS360 BlueTap is a compact payment terminal with a built-in soundbox. It accepts DuitNow QR (static and dynamic), Touch ‘n Go eWallet, Visa and Mastercard, and Alipay+ for tourists. It runs on Wi-Fi or SIM, the battery lasts about 4 to 8 hours, and eligible sales settle to your bank by the next business day.
For QR-only stalls, the Soundbox S1 comes free with the Grow plan. EPOS360 has already equipped 100 Ramadan bazaar vendors in Lembah Pantai with tap-to-pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best POS system for a hawker stall? One that takes QR, e-wallet and card payments on a single portable device, confirms payments out loud and shows sales in an app.
Do hawkers need a POS system or just a QR code? A printed QR code takes payments but can’t confirm them or track sales. A soundbox or terminal linked to an app does both.
Can a hawker stall accept card payments? Yes, with a card-enabled terminal. Card payments carry a fee per transaction, while DuitNow QR is often free.
Does a stall POS work without Wi-Fi? Choose a device with a SIM option so it uses mobile data when there’s no Wi-Fi.
