When someone searches “nasi lemak near me” or “kedai runcit open now”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those three usually have one thing in common: a complete, active Google Business Profile. The profile is free, takes under an hour to set up and is often the first thing a new customer sees. This guide covers how to set it up, what to fill in, how to earn more reviews and how to turn profile views into visits and orders.

Why your Google Business Profile matters

  • It’s where local searches land. People searching on Google Maps or for “near me” see profiles first.
  • It answers the basics instantly. Opening hours, location, phone number and photos, without visiting a website.
  • Reviews build trust. A new customer choosing between two kopitiams often picks the one with more recent reviews.
  • It can send orders. A link to your menu or online store turns a search into a sale.

How to set up your profile

  1. Search for your business on Google Maps. If it’s already listed, choose to claim it. If not, add it.
  2. Sign in with a Google account you’ll keep, ideally a business one rather than a staff member’s personal account.
  3. Enter your exact business name as it appears on your signboard. Don’t add keywords to the name.
  4. Choose the most specific category, such as “Malaysian restaurant” or “Bakery” rather than just “Restaurant”.
  5. Pin your location accurately, especially inside malls, food courts or shophouse rows.
  6. Complete Google’s verification step. The method varies by business.

What to fill in (and what most businesses skip)

Section What to do
Hours Add regular hours and special hours for public holidays and festive closures
Photos Shopfront, interior, your best-selling items and the menu board, taken in good light
Description Two or three plain sentences on what you sell and who you serve
Phone and WhatsApp A number someone will actually answer during opening hours
Website or order link Your menu or online store, so searchers can order straight away
Attributes Dine-in, takeaway, delivery, halal-certified (only if certified), wheelchair access

Out-of-date hours are the most common complaint on local listings. Set a reminder to update special hours before Deepavali, Christmas, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. Our festive season checklist has the full year-end calendar.

How to get more Google reviews

  • Ask at the right moment. Right after a customer compliments the food or thanks you at the counter.
  • Make it one tap. Print your review link as a QR code at the counter or on receipts.
  • Ask everyone, not just happy faces. Google’s policies don’t allow you to selectively ask only satisfied customers or to offer rewards for reviews.
  • Never buy or swap reviews. Fake reviews can be removed and can hurt the profile.

How to reply to reviews

Reply to every review you can, good or bad. For good ones, a short thank-you that mentions what they liked is enough.

For bad ones, reply within a day or two, stay calm and keep it short:

  1. Thank them for the feedback.
  2. Apologise for the specific problem, without arguing the details in public.
  3. Say what you’ve changed, or invite them to message you directly.

Future customers read your reply as much as the complaint. A calm answer often does more for you than the original five-star reviews.

Keep the profile active

  • Add new photos every month, especially new menu items.
  • Post updates for promotions, new hours or events.
  • Answer questions people ask on your listing.
  • Check monthly how many people searched, called or asked for directions.

Turn profile views into orders

A profile that only shows your address leaves money on the table. Add a link where customers can see your menu and order for pickup or delivery. Your own online store keeps the full order value, unlike a delivery app, and the customer becomes yours to bring back with a loyalty program. For how this fits with your other channels, see our food ordering system guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free? Yes. Creating and managing a profile costs nothing.

How long does it take to appear on Google Maps? It depends on verification. Once verified, updates usually show within days.

Can I delete a bad review? Not yourself. You can report a review that breaks Google’s policies, such as spam or a review from someone who was never a customer.

Should a hawker stall have a Google Business Profile? Yes, if customers look you up by name or location. Pin the exact stall position inside the food court.

Do I need a website to have a profile? No. An online store or menu link works as your website link.
