A loyalty program is a simple promise: come back more often, and we’ll give you something for it. Points, a free tenth coffee, a members’ price or a birthday treat all count. Done well, it turns occasional customers into regulars. This guide explains how a loyalty program works, the seven common types, how Malaysian brands use them, and how a small business can start one without an app or a marketing team.

What is a loyalty program?

A loyalty program is a structured way to reward customers for repeat purchases. The customer joins, usually with a phone number. Each purchase earns something, and the reward is redeemed on a later visit.

It’s different from a one-off discount. A promotion brings people in once. A loyalty program gives them a reason to return, and gives you a record of who returns.

Malaysians are used to them. The local loyalty market was estimated at about US$406 million in 2024 and is forecast to reach about US$784 million by 2029, according to ResearchAndMarkets.

How a loyalty program works

  1. Join. The customer signs up at the counter, through a QR code or online.
  2. Earn. Each purchase adds points, stamps or credit to their account.
  3. Redeem. They use the reward on a later visit: a free item, a discount or store credit.
  4. Return. You use what you learn (visit frequency, favourite items) to bring them back again.

The weak point is usually step 3. If redeeming takes a separate app or a manual check, customers give up. That’s why it helps when loyalty runs on the same system as checkout.

7 types of loyalty program

Type How it works Best for
Points Earn points per ringgit, redeem for rewards Most retail and F&B
Stamps or visits Buy 9, get the 10th free Cafes, bakeries, bubble tea
Tiered Spend more to unlock better perks (silver, gold) Businesses with clear big spenders
Cashback or store credit Earn credit or top up a balance to spend later Regulars who visit weekly
Paid membership Pay a yearly fee for ongoing discounts Bookshops, specialty retail
Coalition Earn across many brands in one scheme Large chains and partners
Referral Reward customers who bring friends New outlets building a base

Many businesses combine two, such as points plus a birthday reward.

Loyalty program examples in Malaysia

  • Coalition schemes such as BonusLink let members earn at many partner brands.
  • Retail membership cards at pharmacy and supermarket chains offer member prices and points.
  • App-based rewards from ride-hailing and delivery apps let users earn across services.
  • Cafe and bubble tea chains often run points inside their ordering app.

Small businesses don’t need any of that scale. A neighbourhood cafe can run a points or stamp scheme on its POS, linked to each customer’s phone number.

Benefits of a loyalty program for small businesses

  • More repeat visits. A visible reward gives people a reason to choose you over the shop next door.
  • Customer data you own. You learn who your regulars are, unlike orders that come through delivery apps.
  • Cheaper than chasing new customers. A reward to someone who already likes you usually costs less than advertising to strangers.
  • Better slow-day tools. You can send an offer to lapsed members on a quiet Tuesday.

Rewards do cost money. Our guide to loyalty program costs for F&B shows how much to give back and how to tell if it’s working.

How to start a loyalty program

  1. Pick one type that fits how often people visit.
  2. Set a reward that’s reachable within a month for a regular.
  3. Make sign-up take seconds, ideally just a phone number.
  4. Train staff to ask every customer at checkout.
  5. Review sign-ups and redemptions monthly and adjust.

When collecting phone numbers or emails, follow the Personal Data Protection Act 2010: tell customers why you’re collecting it and keep it secure.
