What is a loyalty program?
A loyalty program is a structured way to reward customers for repeat purchases. The customer joins, usually with a phone number. Each purchase earns something, and the reward is redeemed on a later visit.
It’s different from a one-off discount. A promotion brings people in once. A loyalty program gives them a reason to return, and gives you a record of who returns.
Malaysians are used to them. The local loyalty market was estimated at about US$406 million in 2024 and is forecast to reach about US$784 million by 2029, according to ResearchAndMarkets.
How a loyalty program works
-
Join. The customer signs up at the counter, through a QR code or online.
-
Earn. Each purchase adds points, stamps or credit to their account.
-
Redeem. They use the reward on a later visit: a free item, a discount or store credit.
-
Return. You use what you learn (visit frequency, favourite items) to bring them back again.
The weak point is usually step 3. If redeeming takes a separate app or a manual check, customers give up. That’s why it helps when loyalty runs on the same system as checkout.
7 types of loyalty program
| Type | How it works | Best for |
| Points | Earn points per ringgit, redeem for rewards | Most retail and F&B |
| Stamps or visits | Buy 9, get the 10th free | Cafes, bakeries, bubble tea |
| Tiered | Spend more to unlock better perks (silver, gold) | Businesses with clear big spenders |
| Cashback or store credit | Earn credit or top up a balance to spend later | Regulars who visit weekly |
| Paid membership | Pay a yearly fee for ongoing discounts | Bookshops, specialty retail |
| Coalition | Earn across many brands in one scheme | Large chains and partners |
| Referral | Reward customers who bring friends | New outlets building a base |
Many businesses combine two, such as points plus a birthday reward.
Loyalty program examples in Malaysia
-
Coalition schemes such as BonusLink let members earn at many partner brands.
-
Retail membership cards at pharmacy and supermarket chains offer member prices and points.
-
App-based rewards from ride-hailing and delivery apps let users earn across services.
-
Cafe and bubble tea chains often run points inside their ordering app.
Small businesses don’t need any of that scale. A neighbourhood cafe can run a points or stamp scheme on its POS, linked to each customer’s phone number.
Benefits of a loyalty program for small businesses
-
More repeat visits. A visible reward gives people a reason to choose you over the shop next door.
-
Customer data you own. You learn who your regulars are, unlike orders that come through delivery apps.
-
Cheaper than chasing new customers. A reward to someone who already likes you usually costs less than advertising to strangers.
-
Better slow-day tools. You can send an offer to lapsed members on a quiet Tuesday.
Rewards do cost money. Our guide to loyalty program costs for F&B shows how much to give back and how to tell if it’s working.
How to start a loyalty program

Set a reward that’s reachable within a month for a regular.
-
Make sign-up take seconds, ideally just a phone number.
-
